I Want to Use Code to Make a Difference in the World | Interview with Johnson Zhu, Special Scholarship Recipient

"Meeting Johnson Zhu, you are immediately struck by his unassuming humility. If not for an in-person interview, it would be hard to grasp his true character through words alone. Over his six years at Haidian Kaiwen School, he discovered his limitless potential and gradually approached these unknown possibilities."

With a GPA of 4.5, a Platinum Award in the USA Computing Olympiad, and a utility model patent from the National Intellectual Property Administration, Johnson's achievements are clear. However, his vibrant youth, soon turning 18, shines even brighter than these accolades suggest.

01 True Freedom Lies in the Mind, Not Just in Actions

The freedom our school provides isn't about growing without boundaries but about having ample choices and a broad scope for exploration.

Johnson shared that he joined Haidian Kaiwen School in sixth grade. His growth from a boy to a young man mirrors his journey within this campus. To Johnson, his time at Haidian Kaiwen has been fulfilling and free, particularly in terms of the freedom to explore. "I believe I have more freedom than my peers, not to do anything we want, but to have more opportunities to make choices," he said.

Johnson's passion for computers ignited when he started the AP CSA course. Under the guidance of his computer science teacher, Joan Li, he founded the Informatics Olympiad Club from scratch. Along with fellow computer enthusiasts, he shared knowledge about algorithms and problem-solving techniques, aiming to build a competitive informatics team at Haidian Kaiwen and transform the school into a flourishing academic community. Each brave attempt was a chance to challenge himself and hone his mind. Johnson told us that this method of self-directed learning and choosing courses is a mode of study he both loves and aspires to. Teachers also adopt a more student-driven approach, encouraging accumulation and reflection in learning, which has been a significant part of his achievements.

"In this environment, I've developed the ability to think independently and solve problems, which will be invaluable in my future."

A sense of control is the beginning of confidence, and freedom is synonymous with this sense of control. Johnson's steady progress and the confidence and abundance it brings will inspire creativity and talent, helping him to step onto larger stages in the future.

02 Code is Emotionless, But People Are Not

Code builds the digital world, weaving into all aspects of daily life. Behind what seems dry and tedious lies a world full of emotions.

Johnson and his friends, who share an interest in programming, regularly develop new products. They once created an enlarged keyboard for children with cerebral palsy. Last semester, Johnson initiated and led the "Mouth-Controlled Mouse" project, hoping to help individuals with upper limb disabilities or amputations bridge the digital divide. While a few incredibly determined people might learn to use their feet to control a mouse after years of effort, many lose the opportunity to access the internet altogether. In today's information-rich and diverse era, enjoying quality information and content should not be an unattainable dream for them. This stark inequality is profoundly unfair.

Johnson believes designing a tool to allow this group to elegantly access information would be immensely meaningful. United by a shared mission and belief, a group of young people came together to transform the idea of the "Mouth-Controlled Mouse" from concept to reality, from shape modeling to microcontroller testing and logic testing. Johnson and his team members even visited rehabilitation centers to test their device. Seeing those in need using the tool they designed to enjoy the world with dignity was deeply moving for him.

"Code is not for showing off; its charm far exceeds its practical applications. Every line of seemingly cold code is a collision of wisdom in the programmer's mind and a warm humanistic heart."

Usually, solving a problem might take 100 steps, but with algorithms, it could take only 20. In this clash of ideas, code becomes more than meaningful instructions or processes for machines to understand and execute. It’s a journey of transforming the designer's vision into reality, helping vulnerable groups along the way. Johnson's future goal is to write empathetic code, emphasizing human-centered design to help more people in need.

03 The Lack of Computer Education is Largely a Moral Deficit

The rapid development of information technology has challenged traditional values and moral experiences, affecting everything from information security and privacy to cultural and social norms.

As a 12th-grade senior, Johnson has already mapped out his plans for the upcoming application season. He hopes to explore an interdisciplinary study combining computer science and philosophy, gaining a systematic understanding of social ethics. He aims to create comprehensive production models to ensure his products do not offend others and have a more profound social impact. Johnson believes that in the post-industrial era, numerous technologies and tools are undergoing transformation and innovation. While enjoying these conveniences, people seldom consider the potential real-world issues they might cause.

"Technology is not necessarily supreme, but it must be benevolent."

With the explosion of new technologies like artificial intelligence, humanity is entering a new era of digital intelligence. Effectively managing these new technologies has become the most crucial issue for human civilization. To Johnson, transitioning from "technology supreme" to "technology benevolent" hinges on using ethics to guide tools. Technology should resume its subordinate role, address inequalities it creates, and build a governance system for humanity's relationship with technology.

This is Johnson Zhu, a boy who loves code and strives to imbue each string of code with a full soul. During the interview, he attributed most of his achievements to luck. His introverted and humble nature exudes a sense of reliability. However, if you delve deeper, you’ll find that much of his so-called luck is hidden in his consistent hard work.
