Low Ego,High Impact

发布时间:2023-09-07 | 浏览次数:

Dear Students,

You are in adolescence, a time when self-awareness is developing and self-image is becoming increasingly strong. Establishing an appropriate self-image and understanding the relationship between the “self” and the surrounding world is crucial for your growth.

First, let’s understand what “Ego” is. Ego is defined as an innate ability within a person that plays a significant role in their personality. But what functions does the “Ego” serve?

On the positive side, the “Ego” is the source of our self-awareness, beliefs, confidence, and determination. However, the “Ego” also has a negative side. As social beings, we inevitably interact with others, which can lead to conflicts between our self-image and social acceptance. Therefore, managing our self-image becomes an essential skill.

While a strong self-image can help build confidence, truly understanding “low ego” allows us to position our self-image better. This, in turn, enables us to significantly impact the world around us (“high impact”).

The Specific Manifestations of “Low Ego”:

1.      Avoid Self-Centeredness: Respect and Empower Others

Do not always center everything around yourself. Instead, respect others, treat them kindly, and work collaboratively. Importantly, emphasize the significance of “empowering others.” When you empower others, it may seem like you are helping them, but in reality, you are expanding your influence and impacting those around you. When you can influence more people, your “energy field” becomes stronger. You might notice that specific individuals in your class possess a unique charisma, and people are willing to listen to them. This is because they habitually empower others, thus extending their influence to many. A person’s achievements depend not only on their talent, effort, and luck but also significantly on how many people they can influence and whether they have a good team willing to work with them. This is akin to the saying, “If one ascends a height and calls out, it is not that their arms have lengthened, but that those who see them are farther away; if one calls out with the wind, it is not that their voice has grown louder, but that those who hear it are more numerous.”

2.      Be Humble and Learn from Others

Always remain humble and willing to learn from others, regardless of whether they are stronger or weaker than you in certain areas. How should we regard those stronger than us? Certainly not with jealousy or fear. The 17th-century philosopher Burke provided a significant insight: encountering things or opponents stronger than ourselves and recognizing our own shortcomings is an eternal “risk.” The key is positively viewing such “opponents” and examining our deficiencies while learning from those stronger than us to improve ourselves. Even those who may seem inferior to us in some respects have other strengths from which we can learn.

3.      Maintain Focus and Resist Distractions

Understand that our time and energy in life are minimal. Therefore, it is crucial to focus intensely on particular pursuits. Here, I want to share a formula for achieving success:

M+C>B+T.

l  M represents “motivation”: the drive or determination to do something.

l  C represents “confidence” or “capability”: your belief in yourself and your abilities.

l  B represents “barrier”: the inherent difficulties of the task.

l  T represents “temptation”: the various distractions encountered during the task.

This formula indicates that to accomplish something effectively, you must either increase the value on the left side of the inequality or decrease the value on the right side. This means having more significant determination, more substantial confidence, and capabilities while minimizing temptations as much as possible, given that the barriers are constant.

“Low Ego” Does Not Equal “Inferior Ego.” Certainly, appropriately lowering our self-image does not mean lacking self-confidence or adopting a defeatist attitude, feeling that we can change nothing. We must believe that not only is the effort of each individually important and meaningful but also the collective effort of many ordinary individuals can lead to significant change!

Every summer, hundreds of university student volunteers from various famous Chinese universities participate in the “China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS)” organized by the China Social Survey Center at Peking University. They delve into cities, villages, factories, and homes to investigate the actual conditions of health and retirement at the grassroots level in China. Since 2008, except for a few interruptions in certain years, this effort has been sustained despite challenges such as high temperatures, floods, and the pandemic. This initiative has provided a vast amount of detailed firsthand data, indirectly supporting the formulation of many national policies. As students from prestigious universities, each of them commits to making a difference in society through their efforts.

In July of this year, 20 volunteers from our high school went to Xichuan to teach and conduct research. Each of them had specific tasks and needed to prepare for the next day’s activities in advance. When everyone completed their assignments, the team generated tremendous energy. Together, they brought a fresh and potentially life-changing experience to the rural primary school students in the impoverished county.

This is what I mean by believing that each of our efforts is important: “My effort matters; our efforts matter!”

Dear students, as we live in this world, it is crucial to properly position and manage the relationship between the “self” and the surrounding world. In the vast expanse of history, each of us is merely a moment, but even in that brief moment, we must strive to leave our mark on this world! Let’s unite in “Living in the world, growing with the world, and exerting impact on the world!”
